Usually at this time of year in my part of the country it *is* the bleak midwinter, having been full of snow and averaging 15° F for weeks now. However, due to El Niño, we’ve had 40°F and rain since late October. That weather brings its own brand of bleak.
While I’m still not brave enough to shoot photos outside in public (and snow would’ve been better for that anyway) I tried to capture the bleak midwinter mood with an interior shot.
Low light photos are starting to make it abundantly clear to me that a proper camera is in order. But, this will have to do for now.
This post attempts to encompass both this week’s Sinful Sunday and an entry for Exhibit A’s Awesome Christmas Erotica meme for the Day 7 song “In the Bleak Midwinter” (It truly is awesome, you should definitely check out all the entries). You should also check out the rest of the brilliant Sinful Sunday photos by clicking the kiss below.

Actually I think the low-light captures the mood beautifully. And I do love the bare bottom and relaxed/exhausted??? pose!!!

Thanks! I like the low light too, but whenever I shoot in it the image ends up full of fuzz, which usually works of for the theme, but am thinking something other than my cell phone camera might give me more flexibility.
As for relaxed/exhausted, a bit of both 🙂 I have family visiting this weekend 🙂

this reminds me of wyeth’s helga paintings with a different color composition…

Oh wow! Thank you!!!

Even though I knew this was a photograph, it took me a moment to process that it wasn’t a painting. The lighting and composition are really stunning. I agree with F. Leonora – it is very reminiscent of Wyeth. And I love that you used this carol as a prompt! I’m percolating on it right now 🙂

Yes indeed a better camera will help with low lighting as you can alter the ISO setting to let in more light which will reduce the amount of noise in the image. I am a Canon girl myself, not the cheapest for sure but worth every damn penny in my opinion.
Love your composition, the use of negative space somehow makes you seem so very vulnerable and sounds like you have having very British weather at the moment!

Yes, it’s the noise that bothers me sometimes. It doesn’t allow for sharp focus. My friend has a Nikon D50 that I can use but it needs some repair, I am going to try that first before getting a whole new camera.
And yes, our current weather is very British. Too bad having your weather doesn’t bring me physically closer to you all. 🙂

This image, which seems so much like a painting, inspired so many emotional responses in me. You have an amazing talent.

There is nothing I hate more than the dreariness of this time of year. I can’t wait for some daylight again!
